Services to racing brings NZ honour for NZ Racing Hall of Fame Director

Surprised and humbled by his unexpected Queen's Birthday Honour, Allan Fenwick was delighted the award was in part also recognition of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.

Mr Fenwick, who has semi-retired with wife Susan to Marton to be closer to their daughter, has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

"It was totally unexpected and I'm surprised," he said.

"In fact, because I was asked to keep it quiet until Queen's Birthday, only my wife has known and I've been waiting until someone like you [media] called to confirm it was still happening

The honour was in recognition of his services to thoroughbred horse racing in New Zealand, which has been a huge part of his working life.

Mr Fenwick has contributed to thoroughbred racing nationally and internationally and for more than 30 years has held honorary and senior positions in racing administration.

He was chief executive of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing from 1993 to 2005, during which time he oversaw a number of reforms.

This included the introduction of the Judicial Control Authority and the establishment of a national racing bureau to manage all raceday entries, payment of stakes and fees to owners, trainers and jockeys, as well as overhauls of handicapping, training of apprentice jockeys, stud book registrations and websites.

He has also been a board member of the TAB and New Zealand Racing Authority. He was a member of the International Cataloguing Standards Committee representing the Asian Racing Federation and has delivered papers to forums overseas.

He has supported the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame since its inception and continues today as a board member.

Mr Fenwick has been involved with the New Zealand Racehorse Owners Federation for more than 40 years and was secretary and trials organiser for the Manawatu Association between 1974 and 1986. In 2009 he again became secretary.

He has been a board member of the New Zealand Equine Research Foundation since 1993 and secretary since 2009.
