2018 Leishman Media Racing Awareness Award

Applications for the 2018 award are open now.

The NZ Racing Hall of Fame Board has recognised that many mainstream media journalists do not have an awareness of the NZ racing and breeding industries so established the Leishman Media Racing Awareness Award. The award was set up in honour of our past director and international sports commentator the Philip Leishman ONZM.

In addition to a cash sum award, there are three practical components to this award;

  1. Attendance at selected race meetings at Ellerslie where the awardee would be a guest of the Auckland Racing Club;
  2. Attendance as an observer at the Karaka Premier Yearling sales with Trackside and to also meet industry leaders at Karaka; and
  3. As an observer with the Australian television crews when they visit Waikato and Auckland stud farms.

The award will provide the awardee with a practical exposure to the NZ racing and breeding industries which will enable them to present our industry in an informative manner during their future media career.

This award would best suit either students or young journalists who may be looking to make the racing and breeding industry one of their rounds.

As part of the application process, the applicant should write a piece:

  • on what this award would mean to them,
  • how they would benefit from this award, and
  • how the New Zealand racing industry may benefit in the future if they were to win the award.

The applicant should also include with their application, a current CV and a story on the industry - either in print, online or broadcast.

Interviews with applicants will be held in December. The winner will be announced publically at the 2018 Induction Event to be held at Skycity Hamilton on Friday, 9th February 2018.

Applications need to be sent by email to Michelle Brock - michelle.brocknz@gmail.com and close on Thursday, 30th November 2017.
